IAAMRH Journal     Vol23  No.1      2004

From our President

We have lost a great friend, philosopher and guide in Prof. Jeno Tenyi, the former President of IAAMRH. We dedicate this first journal from our Hungarian Secretariat to him and his untiring work towards the progress of the Association. He was compassionate, emotional and dedicated his entire life for social medicine.

His dream of IAAMRH to develop collaborations and cooperation for the health of the Rural Population is fast becoming a reality, and the Belgrade Conference is one of such step in that direction. We are already working closely with WHO, ILO,WONCA, AAMC, EURIPA, SEMERGEN to name a few of such organizations.
Dr.Ashok Patil

Our Association has entered a new phase, and a new era. The European Union has enlarged and now ten more countries, mainly from the former Eastern Block, have joined from 1st May, 2004. This brings new challenges, new problems and a complex dynamism to the fore. The issues of 'Rural Health' will have to be addressed in a more specific manner than in a general way. The 'European Chapter' of our Association assumes a significant role in the New Europe since we shall be addressing the Rural Health needs of 25 countries. The meeting of the European Members of the Executive Bureau held at Budapest in April to motivate the efforts of the 'European Chapter' received a positive start.

The new phase of our Association is starting by relocating the Secretariat at the National Institute of Primary Health Care (NIPHC) in Budapest, with the generous support of the Ministry of Health, Social and Family Affaires of Government of Hungary. The IAAMRH has now entered an agreement with the NIPHC for mutual support active participation of each others' activities. We all are very happy with this new development and the first issue of our Journal is the outcome of this effort. The newly elected Bureau members are taking a keen interest in achieving the goals set up by our founders and I am sure that all our efforts would definitely lead to 'HEALTH FOR ALL RURAL PEOPLE'.

THE NEWLY ESTABLISHED SECRETARIAT OF IAAMRH

Refering to the Presidential Foreword, "the association has entered a new phase, and a new era." The new phase strats with the re-launch of the Secretariat after its three year period of passivity. On the other hand, with the recently enlarged European Union the Association, along with the Secretariat and, especially the European Chapter are facing new problems and challanges in the area.

With the generous support of the Hungarian Ministry of Health, Social and Family Affair the intention of relocating the Secretariat became reality. By having the Memorandum of Understanding(MOU) for Hosting the Secretariat of International Association of Agricultural Medicine and Rural health (IAAMRH) by the National Institute of Primary Health Care, Hungary signed by Dr. Ashok V. Patil (President of IAAMRH) and Dr. Sándor Balogh (Director General of NIPHC), the Secretarait has been set up at the National Institute of Primary Health Care, Budapest, Hungary.

According to the MOU, the NIPHC, Hungary establishes and runs the Secretariat of the IAAMRH for three years from January, 2004. As its contribution of the host institution in kind, NIPHC provides necessary Office rooms and infrastructure, and performs all the functions of the Secretariat as laid down by the Statues and Bylaws of the IAAMRH.

The two organizations also agreed to work together with the ambition of achieving the common goal to improve the "Quality of Life" in rural population across the globe. In order to realise this common goal, both organizations work in collaboration with relevant UN bodies and other international and national agencies.

Within the frame of this cooperation a proposal for special tasks was also made:
  • Health determinants' assessment of rural people through studying the social and environmental factor

  • Working out a health care model improving the health service efficacy in the rural area through establishing cooperation on small area and regional level
  • Studying the international and EU experiences and promoting the integration of Hungary to the European Union for Improving the health determinants and health services of rural communities.
